Secretary Omar Ali (2006 -2010)
Personality, Profile 7:17 PM Text Size : [+] | [-]Omar's life was very eventful. During his primary school, he skipped his year 5 as his dad wanted him to help him fishing. He passed the then Common Entrance and went for boarding school which was 24 kms away. Being the top student in Lawas Secondary School, he was selected to study at Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, Miri after his LCE.
He continued his 6th former at the same school after doing pretty well in his MCE. He represented his college in Soccer, Sepak Takraw, Snorkling and Crabbing. During school holidays, he went to work in Brunei as PR in one of foreign companies and once employed as English teacher at a private school teaching diplomats' wives. He was never unfamiliar with culture in Brunei. His dad was from Brunei and most of his relatives lives there. For the love of his origin, his dad gave him the same name with the former ruler of the Kingdom, Sultan Omar Ali Saiffudin. In 1981, he has to end his love affair with royal princess to continue his study in KL. He was called 'Maharaja' by his campus fraternity.
PGABS Secretary is a Brunei Malay of warrior blood. His dad migrated and met his mum in Lawas who was of Indian origin. The family of his mum was a merchant from eastern Indian continent and came to Malaysia to introduce roti canai and papadom. They have families in Penang, Kuching, Mukah, Bintulu, Lawas and Sabah. In Penang his family roots started with "K.M." and in Sarawak with prefix "Tambi". His prefix "Putra" dropped after ending his royal affair.
Omar took up golf in Bintulu in 1990 after finding snooker very dull. Six months later, he won the 3rd placing during the Captain Trophy and that was his first wining experience. He stopped golfing in 1994 as he went to work at Solomon Island as crane operator. A year later, he went to work at Frementle, Western Australian as a tugboat pilot. He made another brief stint at Port Moresby before coming back to the state late 1998. On July 1999 Omar sunk-in an ace at hole 7 during one of the tournament at Kelab Golf Bintulu and won him a Peugeot car. Two years later the coveted car was stolen together with his Maruman golf set.
Omar moved to Kuching in 2001 for a better job deal. In 2006 he was the Secretary of PGABS and the same year appointed Treasurer of Masjid SUKMA Development Project. In golf, his name was never crafted in any big tournaments wining list. But he has the following records to share:
