How a golf set works
Information 11:44 PM Text Size : [+] | [-]A golfer is only allowed to bring 14 clubs into a golf game. However, what clubs he or she brings in is not governed. A typical golf set usually consists of 3 woods which are the 1(driver), 3 and 5 woods, 8 irons which are 2 through 9 irons, a pitching wedge, sand wedge and putter. There are 4 different types of clubs; the wood, iron, wedge and putter.
* Wood clubs are meant for shots which are intended to send the golf ball sailing a long distance. Don't be deceived by the name though, woods are now mainly made out of metals. They're called woods because they were initially made out of wood but the development of metals has allowed it to replace wood.
* Irons are meant to match the various situations that golf players may find themselves in. These clubs are used for hitting longer shots almost as far as wood clubs down to shots meant to only travel a short distance.
* Wedges are used for chipping the ball upwards (but not necessarily a long distance). These are for specific situations where players want to get their ball out of a sand bunker or if they want to place a ball on the green without it rolling any further.
* Putters are used for shots taken on the green. These clubs focus on allowing the player to accurately roll their ball into the hole from a short distance.
As you can see, there are different clubs for the different situations golfers find themselves in. There are also numbers attached to the different irons and woods, e.g. 9 iron, 3 wood, etc. These numbers are used to label how far the club is designed to hit. Generally a club with a lower number is meant to hit the ball further than a club with a higher number. However, there are no defined distances that a club can hit because it is still very dependent on the player's skill.
