KUCHING: Kenneth Christian-John De Silva staved off a determined challenge from Rahman Putra Golf Club’s Ng Choo Tick and Sibu Golf Club’s Lee Ka Tung to win a sudden death play-off and retain his Sarawak Amateur Open title at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) yesterday.

TEED FOR SUCCESS: Kenneth (second left) and Kelly with Wong (centre), Chieng (right) and SGA deputy president Brian Chien.

The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) golfer was delighted to be able to lift the Datuk Amar James Wong Kim Min Challenge Trophy for a second time.

He won the title at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) last year.
“It was tough playing against Ng but I just stayed calm and steady. Then he (Ng) began to make many errors in the play-off and I was able to capitalise on that to win,” Kenneth said when met after the game.

He would be coming back to Sarawak again if he does not turn professional later this year.
“It was quite a good year for me and this is my third title within one month. I won the Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open two weeks ago and the Police Amateur Open last week,” said the junior who took up the sport at the age of five.

He also finished among the top ten at the Selangor Amateur Open in Jan this year. He will be playing in a few other tournaments which will be decided by MGA.

Kenneth, 19, who is now playing golf full-time, had earlier posted a similar two-day gross score of 150 with Ng and Lee on the final day of the championship.

He also collected the men’s champion trophy and a cash voucher worth RM2,000.
Ng, who finished second, received a RM1,700 cash voucher while third-placed Lee received a cash voucher of RM1,500.

The fourth place went to Leonard Chin of KGS who edged MGA’s Gavin Kyle Green into fifth on count back (OCB) after both returned a similar score of 151.

Sixth to 12th finishers were Mohd Azman Basharuddin, Mohd Iszaimi Ismail, Alexander Lau, Jeremiah Kim, Chin Jun Nian, Mohamad Iylia Mohd Jamil and Kenju Cheung.

The men’s nett title went to Faizul Hafiz Zulkifli who had a two-day total score of 146, followed by Jeremy Chan of Saujana Golf and Country Club with 150 and Daniel Yeo of DGCC with 151.
Meanwhile, MGA golfers dominated the Sarawak Amateur Ladies Open by grabbing three out of the top five positions in the gross event and sweeping the nett event.

Kelly Tan, who posted a 77 gross score on the opening day, fired a better round of game yesterday with a 72 for a two-day total score of 149 to lift the title and collect RM1,200.
It was the third title for the 16-year-old after she won the Selangor Ladies Amateur Open in Jan and MSSM Golf Under-18 title in middle of March.

The Form Five student of SMK Dato Syed Esa, Batu Pahat in Johor finished second in the Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open, third in the U-16 category Faldo Series in Shenzhen, China.
Kelly took up the game when she was 12 years old, influenced by her father who is also a golfer.
“My next tournaments will be the Sabah Amateur Open from April 23-25 and representing Johor at Sukma XIII in Melaka in June,” she said.

Coming in second place was Gertrude Lee of KGS with a score of 154 while MGA’s Anil Johan edged teammate Nur Durriyah Damian into fourth spot OCB after both returned a similar score of 157.
Amanda Chin of KGS was fifth with a score of 158. Gertrude collected a RM1,000 cash voucher while Anil received a RM800 cash voucher.

The nett event was won by MGA’s Iman Mohd Nordin who recorded a two-day total score of 156. She beat teammate Hillferah Tan OCB after they both carded a similar score.

In the invited guests category, Lau Chai Seng carded a 68 nett score to pick up a cash voucher of RM600.

Second on OCB was Clarence Chin who won a cash voucher worth RM500 while new Sarawak Golf Association (SGA) president Patrick Chieng was third with a 69 after he edged Gilbert Ho into fourth spot on OCB.

The fifth and sixth positions were won by Stephen Chia and Bong Tee Yen.
Kho Hua Sin took the gross title by posting a score of 79 while second and third respectively were Jimmie Teo and Michael Lee.

Patron Datuk Amar James Wong Kim Min and organising chairman Patrick Chieng gave away the prizes.
