Abdul Rahim bags first new year title

KUCHING: Prodigy Abdul Rahim Abang Abdul Rahman overcame the challenges of older and more experienced players to win the Group A gross event of the Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) Chap Goh Mei Special yesterday.

The 16-year-old from Tunku Putra Secondary School carded 75 for the day to win his first title of the year, collecting RM800 for his effort.

Second in this category for players with handicaps of 17 and below was South Korean junior golfer Oh Sea Joon who posted 76. He received RM600.

In third place was Albert Tanon with 77. He picked up RM400 while Abang Abdul Rahman (79) and Hoan Kee Hock (80) were fourth and fifth respectively.

The Group A nett winner was Chow Ting Leh who returned 68 to grab the first prize of RM500. Two strokes behind was Chung Yong Hwa while Peter Sim was third on count back (72) over Mohammed Amin Adenan.

In Group B nett contest, played over the Siol and Demak courses, Wan Alwi Wan Mustapha carded 66 to win the first prize of RM800.

He beat Ahmad Budin into second place on countback after both returned similar scores. Joseph Chai was third with 67. Ahmad pocketed RM600 while Chai, RM500.
Liew Thiam Fatt took fourth spot on countback over Michael Ting after both golfers posted a similar 70.

The winner of the Group B gross event was Abdul Aziz Ismail who returned 91. He won RM350.
Osman Saadiah finished second after beating Anthony Tiong on a count back. They both carded 92.
Group B was for golfers with handicaps 18 and above and played over the Matang-Santubong courses.

The first tournament organised by KGS for the year attracted more than 190 members.
Meanwhile, club captain Patrick Chieng was happy to note more South Koreans joining KGS as members.

“We do have many South Koreans winning tournaments here and I welcome more of them to join our club.”

Chieng said the next big KGS event would be the 41st Sarawak Amateur Open from April 2 to 4.
“The KGS Team Match Play will be held from Apr 10 to May 9 to take advantage of the good weather,” he added.

He urged interested golfers to form their teams and register as soon as possible because the competition is to 16 teams under the double knock-out format.

In conjunction with the Chap Goh Mei Special, KGS also held a Chinese New Year open house at the club lobby.

Lucky draws and a lion dance performance were among the activities organised.
