RULE 25-2 In Action

Dillah's ball was embedded in the rough to the left of the 9th fairway Matang, on a wet and soggy afternoon last Tuesday. He announced his intention to lift the ball without penalty to his fellow competitor, Haji Musa. Haji Musa, however said that Dillah can only do so if the ball was embedded in a closely-mown area through the green (Rule 25-2). "Being an ex-captain of a golf club I should know," Haji Musa argued. Dillah was still not satisfied because he had seen people lifting embedded balls without penalty even in the roughs. Luckily, a third member of the flight, Saadi was close by.
"What do you think?" Dillah asked Saadi for a second opinion. Being an avid reader of the Rules of Golf, Saadi explained to the two (there is a super ball at stake here) that while it is true that Rule 25-2 states that a ball embedded in its own pitch-mark in the ground in any closely-mown area through the green may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole, KGS has a local rule which allows you to drop a ball embedded in its own pitch mark through the green without penalty.

Haji Musa then allowed Dillah to have his way but when Dillah takes relief, the ball again embedded on impact.

Hj Musa: " Now you must play as it lies!"

Saadi: " No, Dillah now may place the ball as near as possible to the spot where it embedded when re-dropped, but not nearer the hole".

Haji Musa, still not satisfied and with a raised voice: "Where in the rule does it say that?"

Saadi, still as calm as ever: " You look up Decision 25-2/2.5!".

Haji Omar: "Wow!!. There is no need to call Zainudin now!".

Dillah took his relief but subseqently duffed his shot. The superball was eventually won by Haji Omar Ali, the no. 1 buaya in KGS.

Through The Green"Through the green" is the whole area of the course except:
a. The teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played; and
b. All hazardson the course.
