The golfers first question must be: does Obama play golf? Yes, he does but he is not as keen on it as the two Bush presidents or Dwight Eisenhower who was president between 1953 and 1961 and succeed by John F Kennedy. Obama prefers to have his share of the fairways in private.
Recently he put in a round at the Olomana course in Hawaii. This was his second after getting the Democratic Party nomination. His vice-president elect Joe Biden is also a golfer. The lefties can also brag as Obama plays left handed.
Most US Presidents from the fifties onwards have played golf but no one was so famous for it than Eisenhower.
The Eisenhower Trophy the trophy that goes to the best man team in the World Amateur Team Championship is named after him. The trophy, presented by Friends of American Golf, honoured Eisenhower who welcomed them to the White House in 1958.
Eisenhower is the only US president to be a member the strictly private and men only Augusta National Golf Club.
It is estimated that Eisenhower played close to 100 rounds in a year during his two terms in the White House. Ike, as he was nicknamed, even practiced on the South Lawn of the White House. Most famous of his golf stories is the quote he gave after a frustrating round.
He said, “If I don’t improve, I’m going to pass a law that no one can ask me my golf score.”
Gerald Ford was famous for hitting way ward shots into pro-am galleries and comedian Bob Hope always took a crack at him for this. They were always paired together in the Bob Hope Pro-Am.
The elder Bush was the honorary chairman of the Presidents Cup in 1996 and the current Bush chairman when the Cup returned to the United States in 2005.
Bill Clinton is the first sitting US president to be honorary chairman when he was elected in 2000.The 2009 chairman is yet to be decided. Will it be Obama?I hope so.
Perhaps if any US president would pass a law to make them to play better golf he would because all including Obama are not very good at it.Kennedy is rated as the best golfer amongst all playing presidents. Next is Eisenhower and then Ford.
Richard Nixon and Clinton are way down the ladder.
Most world leaders who play golf, including our Kibaki and Thambo Mbeki, have never been good at the game.
