GETTING OUT OF THE WOODS

Text Size : [+] | [-]

Every golfer hits into the woods at sometime or another. The trouble is most people don't know how to come out and often do not look at the alternatives. Unless the ball is dead against the tree or in dense jungle, most of the time you can find a way to move the ball towards the target, usually of course with some element of gamble attached.

Top amatuers will always take the calculated gamble rather than just chip the ball sideways onto the fairway.

Most high handicappers will play the first shot they can see and usually the wrong one. Next time, step back and take a second look if the best way is to hook the ball from right to left, slice from left to right or go over or under and sometimes if no other choice, go through.
During one of the matchplays, my friend's ball landed behind a tree and I told him "Tress are 90 percent air, so look for option..." Since the ball was 170 meters from the green, he chose to slice the ball around the tree. Here are the tips
  1. Take a no 4-iron. Remember the less loft on the club, the more side spin you will get.
  2. Aim your stance well left of the trees and take your grip after you have open the club face- the degree you wish to slice is determined by how much you open the club face.
  3. Now go ahead and make your normal swing picking a target well left which you must swing towards and the ball will naturally turn from left to right towards your primary target.
Many golfers made the mistakes of swinging too much towards the right and wound up hitting the ball straight into the trees infront of them with the open club face.
