Banker Hassan wins PGABS President’s Cup 2007

KUCHING: Bankers Mohamad Hassan and Abdul Wahab Johari were in sizzling forms that saw them win the PGABS President’s Cup 2007 staged at Damai Golf and Country Club on Saturday.With the duo returning a nett score of 67, Mohamad Hassan, with a handicap of 20 emerged champion on-count-back while Abdul Wahab, (handicap 24) had to settle for second place.Taking advantage of the excellent weather and commendable green, new golfer Mohamad Zaidell finished in third place winning on-countback on a 3-under 69, relegating Awang Halmi and seasoned Roslan Salleh to fourth and fifth placings respectively.Arfan Suib, Awang Damit and Annuar Abu Baker carded a 2-under 70 nett to finish on countback sixth to placings respectively while Rosman Suut finished at ninth and Hosen Sondong 10th.
In the gross category, a six handicapper, Awang Sani Seruji stood tall after returning a gross score of 75 to emerge top. Second placing went to Johari Aman with a 77 and third, Mohamad Fikri who carded a 78. Zainudin Akup and Yusri Jumail were fourth and fifth respectively.
A total of 124 players from throughout the State participated in the tournament which was organised in conjunction with PGABS’s 10th anniversary.
Meanwhile, according to PGABS President Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof, who is also Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya, the association plans to establish a fund for its Youth Gold Development Programme next year.“The objective of the fund is to help potential young golfers, especially Bumiputera youths to develop the sport and represent PGABS at bigger tournaments in future,” said Fadillah at the dinner held on Sunday at Sarawak Golf Club, here.
Fadillah was optimistic that PGABS would have its own young golfers to represent the association by middle of next year, starting off with an adoption programme (for the youths).
“We hope the young golfers can become our ambassadors and I hope all members of PGABS will support this project,” he added.Also present at the dinner were PGABS Patron, Datuk Talib Zulpilip, PGABS Deputy President, Datuk Mazelan Bugo and Datuk Sepuan Anu.
