Neighbourliness to prevent crime
Society must warn criminals that all law-abiding citizens help each other in times of trouble: Fadillah
KUCHING: Neighbourly living must be promoted extensively as one of crime prevention mechanisms in the State because the status of an individual doesn’t even prevent him from falling victim. Petra Jaya Member of Parliament Fadillah Yusuf, in giving this reminder, believed that Eastern culture and the practice of living in good neighbourly conduct in the rural villages should be applied in residential estates in the towns and cities.
He said that society must impress upon the criminals that all law-abiding citizens had each other in times of trouble and when protection was needed most.
Fadillah said the spirit of neighbourliness would also enhance unity and provide a sense of belonging and security among the people.
“With neighborliness as a crime prevention mechanism, it is hoped that crimes such as the rampant abduction, burglary, robbery and snatching, will drop drastically during the coming Hari Raya celebrations,” he said during the break of fast with residents (orphans) of Pertubuhan Anak- Anak Yatim Sarawak (Peryatim), at Surau Al-Quddus in Taman Sri Wangi on Saturday.
The event was organised by the surau working committee, Amateur Golf Bumiputera Sarawak Association (PGABS) and Vico.

Fadillah said individualistic and careless attitudes towards each other might one day see the breaking down of the fabric of society…exposing it to the risks of crime.
“If society wants peace of mind, personal safety and social order, all must practise and adopt neighbourliness as their culture. This involves greater co-operation and care,” he said.
On another matter, he hoped that other NGOs would emulate PGABS when it came to contributing to social responsibility. He commended members of PGABS for being kind and generous to orphans in the State.
Fadillah, who is also PGABS president, also presented Hari Raya gifts to the orphans.
