KUCHING: Sarawak Bumiputera Amateur Golf Association (PGABS) is organising the qualifying round of the Saske Cup 2007 at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) on Aug 19. According to president Fadillah Yusof, there would be 20 prizes on offer - 10 in the gross event and 10 in the nett.
“What’s more exciting, there are four prizes for the hole-in-one … a LMG 4WD, a home theatre, a Srixon iron set and a 29″ Pensonic TV.
“If there is no winner (except for the LMG vehicle), the prizes will be open to lucky draws during the grand final,” he said, adding that a total of 10 lucky draws would be given out and goodies valued at RM220 would be given out to the first 120 competitors.
Fadillah said there were a total of 22 legs including Singapore and Brunei and the five best gross winner from each leg would go for the grand final to be played over 36 holes (two days) at Desaru Golf and Country Resort on Sept 1 and 2.
“In addition to the top five gross players from each of the rounds, four amateurs from Indonesia and another four from Thailand have also been invited to make the Saske Cup 2007 a regional affair.
“Besides the attractive prizes, the winner of the grand final will be sponsored to play in the Asian Professional Golf Qualifying School,” added Fadillah who is also Petra Jaya Member of Parliament.
He said it was PGABS’ intention to make the Saske Cup an important amateur tournament in addition to those organised annually at State level, and thus far, looking beyond the association’s tenth year, with the support of many sponsors, “we hope the Saske Cup is heading in the right direction.”
Entry fee is RM200 inclusive of buggy fees and the closing date is August 13 and interested golfers with handicap 24 and below are to contact Zabidi Shabaneh at 019-8177786 or Omarali Matjais at 019-8578797. Acceptance will be on a first come first served basis. The tee-off time is 7.30am.
The Saske Cup 2007 was officially launched by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said on March 24 during its first qualifying round in Desaru. As a Visit Malaysia 2007 activity, the final is expected to be officiated by Tourism Minister Datuk Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
Last year’s qualifying rounds of 14 have now been increased to a possible 24, with 20 in Peninsular Malaysia and one each in Sarawak, Sabah, Singapore and Brunei participated by more than 2,000 golfers.
