KUCHING: Bintulu golfer Kelana Ibrahim won the SASKE Cup 2007 golf tournament with 78 gross, played in a breezy Damai Golf Country Club on Sunday. Two strokes behind was Terence Chai of Kelab Golf Sarawak to secure the second placing.Mohamad Lokman, carded 81 to finish third with Muas Sebli and Abdul Aziz Kadir in fourth and fifth placings respectively on countback. They are all from Kelab Golf Sarawak.

The top five gross winners will represent Sarawak in the grand finale at Desaru Golf & Country Resort, Johor on Sept 1-2 and the winner will be sponsored to play in the Asian Professional Golf Qualifying School.Meanwhile, Awang Sani Seruji (DGCC), Omar Mohamad (KGS), A Johari Ahmad (PGC), Awang Madzelan (DGCC), AND Abu Bakar Kiprawi (KGS) secured 6th to 10th placings.In the nett category, Yakub Jalel, a 19-handicapper, from Petra Golf Club was in his sizzling form to earn the top spot. He returned four strokes ahead of Saadi Semaon despite the later playing his best-of-the-day 67.Gepairi Jol (PGC), Stanley Kong (KGS), Yakub Ramli carded 68 to finish third, fourth and 5th respectively on countback followed by Ahmad Budin (6th), Awangku Jinal (7th), Wan Hashim (8th), Abdul Wahab Rahim (9th) and Datu Mazelan.

Fadillah, who is also the President of PGABS stressed that success is not dependent on fierce competition, expensive marketing or R&D budgets, but on smart strategic moves that will win the future."The first Saske Cup in Sarawak is going to be an annual affair and with improvements and enhancements.

This year is also the first time the winner of the grand final will be sponsored to play in the Asian Profesional Golf Qualifying School (AGPA) and this is always the dream for every amatueur as it is stepping stone towards becoming professional players," said Fadillah.

He added: “Relationship between PGABS-SASKE–DGCC has created a landmark that charts a bold new path in promoting golf to the highest level, the value that other clubs in the State have yet to offer."With the strategic move, looking beyond and thinking forward from both parties have made the tournament possible despite PGABS not having a golf course of its own," he said. Tourism Malaysia accepted Saske Cup 2007 as one of the Visit Malaysia 2007 events and its participation by lot of profesionals worldwide. He thanked the organisers, Saske System Leisure Sdn Bhd and its managing director, Datuk Shahrir for their continuous support to Desaru.
